Samurai selvedge linen!
The jaw-dropping details come at you fast and fierce, like a Bushido Master, rushing his luckless opponent: multicolored, untipped, specially hand-rolled and hand-stitched.
You've heard of selvedge denim. Well this is Crazy Selvedge Linen, because it's made of Japanese linen from Osaka, a special fabric that is so crazy-exquisite, it is, to quote our in-house fabric psychologist, “certifiably insane.”
Amusing factoid!
Selvedge (from the word “self- edge”) is a technique that dates back to the 16th century. By no coincidence that was also the time the Samurai were straight-up killing it all over feudal Japan. Fast forward to 2012, and we’re your skilled sartorial Samurai, hand-making these bad boys to order, right here in our Montreal dojo studio.
Our Japanese linen.
Linen. A.K.A. Linum usitatissimum, A.K.A. Flax. It's not easy to make, but when made right it's the stuff of dreams – light, all- natural, cool-to-the-touch dreams. That’s why it’s a great summer fabric. But linen creases and crinkles easily, and a linen suit that’s wrinkled makes you look less like Thomas Crown and more like Crownless Tom, Traveling Hobo. But a linen tie splits the difference – it’s a small swath of fabric that’s easy to maintain, and it’s perfect for hot weather, able to absorb up to 20% of its own weight in water - or your own sweat - but Dolbeau does not advocate mentioning this on a first date.
Dolbeau signature craftsmanship.
What makes a Dolbeau tie? You can tell one by way it looks and feels. Here are three signature features that set our ties apart from the rest.
Orange slip stitch
Factoid: a slip stitch is used to sew the tie together after it’s folded. All Dolbeau ties are slip stitched by hand. It’s like we teach each tie our secret handshake before we release it into the wild.
Orange bar tack
Ours is sewn by hand and provides a more durable joining than the standard stitch used in machine made neckties. Like George Clinton or Prince, our bar tack stitch is funky and built to outlast the poseurs.
Hand-rolled + Selvedge tip
Unique hotness. One edge is hand-rolled and the other is crazy multi-colour selvedge – combined, they leave clueless bystanders in awe and connoisseurs breaking out in applause. You’re welcome.
Style points.
There once was a time when linen was strictly for summer shirts and suits. There was also once a time when the most infamous Kardashian was a lawyer for O.J. Simpson.
How times have changed.
It’s 2012 and we’ve finally granted linen free agency - it’s no longer a summer-only fashion.
Linen, unlike cotton, gets much better with time. Just like your good old pair of Levi’s.
Blogger's review
I recently had the opportunity to work with the good folks over at Dolbeau. They gave me an opportunity to review one of their ties. They sent me a Samurai Selvedge Japanese Linen Tie. The use of linen is really refreshing from just seeing linen in pants and rugged button ups for the summer time.
I paired this tie with a classic oxford button up, to give it a pop. The contrast of the red striping is super clean and brings presence to the tie. Now the detailing on this tie is superb. For all the detail lovers you will love this.
The multicolored selvedge at the tip of the tie brings life and character to this piece. The hand rolled tip is probably the greatest personal touch I have seen yet. Who else would get down and personally roll the tip of your tie for detailing? You shouldn’t really take yourself too serious all the time, ties can get boring but with a selvedge and rolled edges detailing such as this, you’re really giving a F*** You to the corporate world. These ties are made by order so that’s a plus when if you really want that personal feel.
